Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has assured the public that transport fares will remain unchanged for now, despite recent reductions in fuel prices.
His statement follows growing public demand for a decrease in fares and earlier threats by transport unions to raise rates during periods of fuel price hikes.
Addressing the issue, Mr. Nikpe explained that any adjustments to transport fares are governed by a structured and collaborative process involving key stakeholders. He emphasized that the Ministry is actively engaging with transport operators and unions to ensure decisions are guided by a fair and reliable formula.
“We are in constant dialogue with transport unions and operators. The adjustment of fares—whether an increase or a reduction—is based on a formula that ensures fairness and sustainability. At this point, we have not reached the conditions that warrant a change,” Mr. Nikpe stated.
He further highlighted the importance of maintaining stability within the transport sector, reassuring commuters that fares will remain steady for the foreseeable future.
“We are committed to working closely with all stakeholders. Ghanaians can rest assured that current fares will hold for some time before any adjustments are considered,” he added.
The Ministry’s stance reflects a balanced approach, aiming to provide relief to commuters while ensuring transport operators can sustain their services. Discussions on fare reviews are ongoing, with the goal of reaching mutually beneficial outcomes for all parties involved.
