Transforming Media Landscape: GIBA’s New Agenda

Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) Chair, Torgbui Crystal-Djirackor, has called on the Ghanaian media to unite and forge a powerful platform to amplify their voices.

Speaking at the Investiture of GIBA executives in Accra, Crystal-Djirackor emphasized that unity is the cornerstone of recognition and respect for the media as a force for change. However, he expressed deep concern about the myriad challenges facing journalism practice in Ghana, which undermine freedom and the rights of citizens.

The outgoing chair charged the incoming executives to prioritize service, create a compelling vision for the Association, and demonstrate effective leadership. He urged them to uphold the highest standards of ethical professionalism, fairness, and integrity, and to speak truth to power without fear or favor. “The media represents the masses, and it is imperative that we chart a path that engages the young media generation and ensures good leadership,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) President, Kwabena Dwomfour, accused security agencies of being the primary violators of media freedom.

In his remarks, Dwomfour expressed dismay that these agencies, tasked with protecting citizens, often demonstrate a blatant disregard for the work of journalists.

“It is surprising that security agencies, which are supposed to ensure citizen security, are often the ones who fail to understand the critical role journalists play in national development,” he noted.

The GJA, Dwomfour said, is committed to deepening relationships with security agencies, while also pursuing justice for murdered journalist Ahmed Suale.

“We are filing a case at the ECOWAS Community Court because we believe that security agencies are concealing information that could bring justice to Ahmed Suale’s family,” he said. “We will not be deceived or lied to. We demand transparency and accountability.”

In his address, newly installed GIBA President, Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, highlighted the Association’s achievements since its formation and outlined his vision for a renewed broadcasting center that is innovative, resilient, credible, and truly representative of the Ghanaian people. “A shared vision is key to moving our Association forward,” he emphasized.
