
Interior Minister, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka has ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to immediately transfer all regional, divisional, and district police commanders stationed in mining areas, a decisive move to combat illegal mining popularly known as galamsey,
According to the minister, the directive aims to replace long-serving officers who have failed to effectively address illegal mining activities, which continue to pose a significant threat to the environment and local communities.
Minister Mubarak emphasized that the government remains committed to eradicating illegal mining and ensuring that law enforcement officers are held accountable for their roles in upholding the law.
He stressed that officers assigned to mining areas must demonstrate commitment, integrity, and effectiveness in dealing with the menace.
The IGP is expected to implement the transfers with immediate effect, with new commanders being deployed to key mining zones to strengthen enforcement and curb illegal mining operations.
