TRAGIC: Nigerian Boxer Olanrewaju Segun Dies In A Bout At Bukom.

The boxing world is still grappling with the sudden and devastating loss of Olanrewaju ‘Success’ Segun, a Nigerian pugilist whose life was cut short in the ring on March 29, 2025.

The 40-year-old former National and West African light-heavyweight champion met his tragic end during an undercard bout against Ghanaian contender Jon Mbanugu at Ghana’s Professional Boxing League’s Fight Night 15, held at the iconic Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. What began as a night of promise and competition ended in a scene of sorrow that has left fans, fighters, and families reeling.

Segun, a native of Lagos with a storied career, stepped into the ring that evening carrying the weight of his past triumphs and recent struggles. With a professional record of 13 wins—12 by knockout—in 23 fights, he had once been a dominant force, his fists a symphony of power that earned him titles and respect across West Africa.

But the last few years had tested his mettle, with four straight losses dimming the spotlight that had long followed him. Against Mbanugu, a 28-year-old Ghanaian dubbed “Power” for his explosive style, Segun aimed to prove he still belonged among the elite.

Mbanugu, buoyed by the home crowd, countered with ferocity, his youth and ambition evident in every punch. By the fifth round, the bout was a tight affair, with Segun reportedly ahead on points, his experience edging out Mbanugu’s vigor. Then, in an instant, everything changed.

It happened after a seemingly routine exchange. Segun, after receiving some punches from Mbanugu fell and remained unconscious before the referee could intervened.

Stretchered from the ring amid a hushed and horrified audience, Segun was rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, just miles away. Doctors battled to bring him back, but at 11:47 p.m., they delivered the crushing news: Olanrewaju Segun was gone.

Preliminary reports point to a cardiac arrest, though the Ghana Boxing Authority has yet to release an official finding.

The Bukom Boxing Arena, a crucible of Ghanaian boxing lore since its 2016 opening, now bears the weight of this tragedy. Its concrete walls, usually alive with cheers, stood witness to a night that turned celebration into mourning.
