Traffic offenders to face automated fines under new enforcement system – ACP Obeng

The Director of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, has highlighted the role of technology in enforcing the new traffic regulations, warning motorists that traffic violations could be detected and fines issued automatically.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show with Nana Dogbe, ACP Obeng explained that technology would support efforts to identify motorists who flout traffic rules and ensure that offenders are held accountable.

He said the automated fine system would allow traffic violations to be captured electronically, with fines subsequently sent to motorists found culpable. The system is expected to strengthen enforcement by reducing reliance on manual detection and intervention.

ACP Obeng also highlighted the use of speed-limit signs and technology, including cameras, to detect speeding and other traffic violations. He urged motorists to observe posted speed limits and comply with traffic regulations to avoid penalties.

He further discussed proposed or new measures relating to vehicle number plates, including the use of microchip-enabled plates through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), as well as provisions concerning the minimum driving age, children travelling in front seats and drink-driving.

The MTTD director cautioned motorists against assuming that traffic violations would go unnoticed, stressing the importance of responsible driving and compliance with the law.

He urged all road users to familiarise themselves with the applicable regulations, noting that technology-assisted enforcement would help improve road discipline and promote safety for motorists, passengers and pedestrians.
