Early Wednesday morning, a three-storey building still under construction in Klagon, a suburb of Tema in the Greater Accra Region, suddenly collapsed. The accident occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m., resulting in serious injuries to a mother and her three children who were inside an adjoining house. Reports from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) indicate that the collapse caused the wall of the neighboring home to cave in, putting the family in immediate danger.
The injured family was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital where they are receiving urgent medical care. The swift response helped prevent what could have been a tragic outcome. NADMO’s operations team, working closely with the Tema West Municipal Assembly and the local Member of Parliament, arrived at the scene shortly after to conduct search and rescue operations. Their primary focus was to ensure that no one remained trapped beneath the debris following the collapse.
Local residents have expressed concerns about safety in the area, noting that some squatters often seek shelter in unfinished buildings. This habit could pose serious risks, especially when structural integrity is compromised. The incident has raised urgent questions about the enforcement of building regulations and the safety of ongoing construction projects within the community.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse, and an official investigation is underway. While no fatalities have been reported so far, the incident highlights the dangers posed by incomplete construction sites and the need for greater oversight. More updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
