Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Esme Mends has urged the team to be tactically disciplined in order to eliminate WAC in the return leg of their CAF Champions League game.
The Phobians travelled last night ahead of their much anticipated game against Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) in Casablanca on Sunday with a 1-0 aggregate score.
In an Interview on Ahotor FM’s Agorokansie, Mends said although many Phobians are optimistic the team will progress to the group stage of the competition, a few are of the view that the club may drop to the Confederation Cup.
But for Mends the club has what it takes to qualify in Morocco.
“The Hearts team is a strong one and no one should doubt their capabilities. Although I know the Moroccans have an equally strong team, with an extra effort they (Hearts) will progress”.
“This is the stage to show your abilities. This game means a lot to the Hearts family and Ghanaians as a whole and they must not let us down”
“Ghana has lost their two slots in both the Champions League and Confederation Cup so this is the time to start fighting to redeem the lost slots back, ” he concluded.
The 35-year-old has carved out a huge reputation for himself after his retirement which has caught the attention of Phobians and Ghanaians after acquiring his coaching licence.
Mends captained the Phobians during the 2008/2009 season when the club won their last Ghana Premier League title under Serbian coach KostaPapic.
The news of Esme Mends joining the Hearts of Oak technical bench started circulating since Kosta Papic was reappointed head coach of the club on December 1
