“They Are Hooligans” — Teacher Union Demands Tough Response After WASS Attack

The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to expedite investigations into a recent attack on teachers at West Africa Senior High School (WASS).

The incident, which occurred on February 13, 2026, reportedly involved a student who allegedly mobilised a group of colleagues to assault teachers on the school campus.

According to the Ministry, the investigations are expected to be completed within the next two weeks to ensure that all individuals found culpable are brought to justice. The move is also aimed at restoring calm, discipline, and order within the academic environment.

Reacting to the development, the Vice President of the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETTAG), Adokwei Ayikwei-Awulley, called on the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He described the perpetrators as “hooligans” and stressed the need for decisive action from the Ministry of Education, GES, and even the President of the Republic.

Mr. Ayikwei-Awulley warned that teachers may be forced to embark on industrial action if attacks on educators continue unchecked.

“We can decide to go on strike, but for how long?” he questioned, adding that teachers require assurance that their safety is a national priority.

He further proposed the establishment of a special fund to support teachers who suffer assault in the line of duty. According to him, the response must go beyond monetary compensation, insisting that a structured policy must be implemented to address the increasing attacks on teachers.

Mr. Ayikwei-Awulley noted that the continuous recurrence of such incidents suggests that current measures by the Ministry and GES are inadequate, making it necessary for government to introduce a stronger and more enforceable policy to protect teachers across the country.
