ACCRA, Ghana, 27 February: President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled an ambitious GHS50 billion infrastructure drive under the government’s flagship Big Push Programme, with construction already underway on 50 priority road projects spanning 1,144 kilometres across the country.
Delivering his 2026 State of the Nation Address, the President said the initiative is designed to restore critical road networks, open up economic corridors, reduce travel time, lower the cost of doing business, and create thousands of jobs nationwide.
At the heart of the programme is the transformative Accra-Kumasi Expressway, a 198.7-kilometre, six-lane, high-speed motorway that will connect Ghana’s two largest cities.
The expressway is expected to cut travel time between Accra and Kumasi to approximately 2.5 hours, significantly improving trade, logistics, and regional mobility.
The project will be Ghana’s first purpose-built expressway, featuring limited access points, multiple interchanges, enhanced safety systems, and modern engineering standards aimed at reducing accidents and improving efficiency.
In addition to the new projects, government is completing 23 inherited road projects covering 573 kilometres, many of which had stalled due to funding constraints.
President Mahama said visible progress is expected across all 16 regions by the end of the year.
To ensure sustainable financing of road infrastructure, preparations are also underway to reintroduce nationwide road tolling using advanced digital technology to enhance efficiency, transparency, and revenue mobilisation.
The President reaffirmed his vision of turning the entire country into a construction site, stating that the Big Push Programme marks a decisive shift toward accelerated infrastructure development to support Ghana’s long-term economic transformation.
