John Dramani Mahama, the Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed unwavering confidence in the party’s chances of winning the upcoming December 7th polls.
According to Mahama, the recent developments in Parliament have solidified his belief that the NDC is on the path to victory.
Speaking at Tema Community 9 during his two-day tour of the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Mahama highlighted the recent ruling by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin, as a key turning point.
On October 17th, the Speaker officially declared four parliamentary seats vacant, a decision that has shifted the balance of power in favor of the NDC.
With 136 seats compared to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 135, the NDC now holds the majority in Parliament.
Mahama pointed to this ruling as a clear indication that the tide is turning in the NDC’s favor ahead of the 2024 general elections.
He noted that even before a single vote has been cast, the NDC has already been confirmed as the majority in Ghana’s legislature, which he sees as a strong sign of the party’s growing momentum.
The vacant seats were a result of four MPs—Cynthia Mamle Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Peter Kwakye-Ackah (Amenfi Central), and Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena)—violating parliamentary rules by filing to contest the December 2024 elections either as independent candidates or on the ticket of a different political party.
This action, in accordance with Article 97 of the Constitution, automatically forfeited their seats in Parliament.
John Mahama believes that this shift in parliamentary power reflects not only the NDC’s strength but also a deeper sense of purpose and momentum heading into the elections.
He stressed that the NDC’s newly secured majority is just the beginning of what he anticipates will be a decisive victory for the party in December.
