The killing of eight Ghanaian tomato traders: “No Evidence Connecting Traoré’s Visit to the Attack” – Security Expert

The killing of eight Ghanaian tomato traders in northern Burkina Faso on February 14, 2026, has sparked political debate back home, but a leading security analyst has dismissed attempts to link the tragedy to Ghana’s recent political events.

Some members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have suggested that the attack may have been triggered by the invitation extended to Burkina Faso’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré, during the inauguration and swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama on January 7, 2025.

However, Security Analyst and Executive Director of the Africa Center for Security and Counterterrorism, Emmanuel Kotin, has firmly rejected that claim.

According to him, there is no evidence whatsoever linking Traoré’s visit to Ghana with the attack on the traders in Burkina Faso.

Kotin argued that the incident points more to possible intelligence failures and security lapses rather than any diplomatic or political trigger.

In his view, politicising the deaths of innocent traders is both inappropriate and misleading. He stressed that the victims were caught in circumstances beyond their control and were not specifically targeted because of their nationality.

“They were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time,” he indicated, adding that there is no proof the attackers deliberately identified them as Ghanaians before carrying out the killings.

The analyst further urged political actors to exercise restraint and avoid turning national security tragedies into partisan debates. He maintained that while political discourse is part of democratic practice, sensitive security matters should not be exploited for political gain.

He called for a sober assessment of Ghana’s security coordination and intelligence operations to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing that national interest must override partisan considerations.
