Deputy Minister of Energy, Andrew Agyapa Mercer, clarified that, throughout his tenure as a key member of the government’s negotiation team with individual Independent Power Producers (IPPs), there is no overarching agreement between the government of Ghana and IPPs as a collective entity. Instead, negotiations have been conducted separately with each individual company from July until the present.
During a media interview, Mercer explained, “The government of Ghana has entered into agreements with individual companies at different points in time, and our negotiations revolve around these specific entities.” He emphasized that the focus has been on addressing the concerns and interests of each company individually.
Mercer expressed his understanding and acceptance of the government’s approach to engage with IPPs on an individual basis, stating, “I have no qualms if the government has chosen a segmented and role-specific approach to communicate with these companies. They represent their respective members, and ultimately, if it benefits the country, then that is the priority.”
In essence, Mercer underscored the importance of recognizing the distinct negotiations with each independent company and acknowledged that aligning with their specific interests could contribute positively to the nation’s overall benefits.
