The Government Declares April 18 and 21 as Public Holidays for Easter Festivities

The Ministry of the Interior has officially announced Friday, April 18, and Monday, April 21, 2025, as statutory public holidays in Ghana, marking Good Friday and Easter Monday, respectively. This declaration, endorsed by the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, ensures citizens across the nation can fully participate in Easter celebrations, a significant period on the Christian calendar

Good Friday, commemorated on April 18 this year, symbolizes the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, a day of solemn reflection, prayer, and worship for Christians worldwide. Easter Monday, observed on April 21, continues the festivities, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a cornerstone of Christian faith.

Easter holds a special place in Ghanaian culture, blending deep religious significance with vibrant social traditions. Many Ghanaians travel to their hometowns to reconnect with family and partake in communal activities. Churches host a range of events, from sunrise services to vibrant musical performances, while communities organize picnics, sports, and recreational gatherings.

The Ministry’s statement called on the public to uphold the sanctity of the holidays by adhering to national laws and honouring cultural customs. “We urge all citizens to observe these holidays respectfully and responsibly, in alignment with the nation’s legal and traditional frameworks,” the release stated.

Additionally, authorities have emphasized the importance of safety during the extended weekend, urging citizens to exercise caution during travel and public events. This advisory aims to ensure that the festivities are not only joyful but also secure for all participants.

Easter in Ghana is more than a religious event—it’s a time for unity, reflection, and celebration, bringing together people of diverse backgrounds to share in the spirit of hope and renewal. As the holidays approach, the nation anticipates a vibrant and meaningful commemoration.
