The Ghana Reggae Dancehall Awards 2024(GRDA) has taken a significant step to celebrate the full spectrum of the genre

The organizers of the Ghana Reggae Dancehall Awards (GRDA) have announced their second edition of the Ghana Reggae Dancehall Awards 2024 due to the limited recognition reggae and dancehall artists receive in Ghana’s mainstream music awards scene.

The move comes after years of frustration over the limited recognition reggae and dancehall artists receive in Ghana’s mainstream music awards scene.

According to the GRDA board, the TGMA only allocates two categories for the reggae-dancehall genre, despite the genre’s explosive growth and impact across the country.

“The reggae and dancehall scene in Ghana is vibrant, diverse, and constantly evolving. Having just two categories at the TGMAs does not do justice to the immense talent, creativity, and contributions of these artists,” a GRDA spokesperson said at a press conference.

The GRDA plans to present almost 30 categories, ensuring a comprehensive and detailed celebration of reggae and dancehall’s various subgenres and contributors.

From categories like Dancehall vocalist to Reggae Album of the year and even Producer of the Year, the new awards will leave no stone unturned in highlighting all facets of the industry.

Exclusive to the Academy and Board

Unlike traditional award shows, the voting for GRDA winners will not be open to the public but will be determined by a specialized board and an academy consisting of seasoned professionals in the reggae-dancehall scene.

Instead, winners will be determined by a specialized board and an academy made up of seasoned professionals in the reggae-dancehall scene.

This ensures that the awards reflect the expertise of individuals who understand the nuances of the genre. The decision to exclude public voting was explained as a means of prioritizing the integrity of the awards.

“We respect the fans’ voices, but we also recognize the need for industry experts who have been in the trenches, working tirelessly to grow reggae and dancehall in Ghana, to make the critical decisions. This is an opportunity for us to celebrate artistry without the influence of popularity contests,” the organizers said.

This move aims to prioritize the integrity of the awards and celebrate artistry without the influence of popularity contests.

The launch of GRDA provides reggae and dancehall artists with a dedicated platform to be recognized for their unique contributions, and it is anticipated to elevate the genre both locally and internationally.

Nominations for the 2024 edition open from 10th October to 10th November, and the nominees jam will be held on December 13th.
