The Free SHS was not properly implemented – Yakubu

Aspiring National Organiser for the opposition Peoples National Convention, Farudeen Yakubu has opined that, the Free Senior High School implemented by the ruling government was not properly implemented and fears for Ghana’s education in the future

He claims that, the program was hastily implemented without any proper planning because of the government’s manifesto promise but didn’t have any structures to make it a success

He argued that it was part of his party’s plan and that of the National Democratic Congress’ to make the Senior High School progressively free with proper structures and programs

” This Free SHS policy was hastily implemented without proper planning but just a mere manifesto promise. The educational sector has now been politicised by the New Patriotic Party so are doing things haphazardly without thinking about the future repercussions”

“When you fail to plan, you plan to fail. We will surely suffer in the future if we continue to play politics with our education. I fear for the future because it doesn’t look bright”, he said

Fourteen students were sacked by the Ghana Education Service this week after some videos went viral with final year SHS students using vulgar words and threatening messages after writing their Science exams in the ongoing West Africa Senior High School Certificate Exams (WASSCE).

The students alleged that, they couldn’t write the paper successfully although they were given books believed to be what was going to appear in the examination proper

In other schools, teachers and examiners were assaulted by students for not allowing examination malpractice take place in their exams halls. Some students went to the extent of accusing the teachers of belonging to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and for that matter wants them to fail the examination

But for Farudeen, all these are as a result of improper structures and politicisation of the educational system that has brought us to this level

“We called the kids Nana Addo graduates, we bought questions for them to study and go and write exams just to pass and score political points so am not surprised”

” If we don’t change our way of politicising everything, we will kill our educational sector. Let’s not end up bringing out students who can pass exams but has little knowledge of what they learnt and can’t even apply them in their daily lives ” he concluded

The PNC communicator finally said, we should make sure we strengthen our educational system and the Free SHS policy to yield the required results for the betterment of the the country
