Thank You Visit: President Mahama Promises Roads, Jobs, Cashew Board & Better Schools in Bono — Full Speech Broken Down

Sunyani, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama Friday 30th May, 2025 continued his nationwide Thank You Visit with a major visit to the Bono Region, where he expressed his profound appreciation to the people for their overwhelming support in the 2024 general elections.

A large and enthusiastic crowd gathered at the Sunyani Jubilee Park, where President Mahama addressed traditional rulers, religious leaders, members of the political class, and citizens from across the region.

The event was attended by dignitaries including members of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, parliamentarians, party executives, security chiefs, and civil society representatives.

In his address, President Mahama conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the people of the region for their massive endorsement during the polls.

He reiterated his commitment to delivering on his promises and outlined an ambitious development agenda for Bono, anchored on infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, and inclusive governance.

“It is a joy for me to return to this dynamic and culturally rich region not only as President of the Republic but as a grateful son and son-in-law of this land,” he said. “Your unwavering support and the decisive victory you gave the NDC winning 11 out of 12 parliamentary seats was not just a political statement, but a powerful call to action.”

Infrastructure and Roads Development

President Mahama acknowledged the long-standing concerns over the region’s deteriorating road network and assured the gathering that his administration is taking swift action.

He announced that major road projects have been prioritized under the Big Push Infrastructure Program, including:

Sunyani Inner and Outer Ring Roads

Alaska Catholic University Road

Berekum-Sampa Road

Sampa-Wenchi Road

Odumasi-Badu Road

Tsiremasu-Gambia No. 1 & 2 Roads

Sunyani-Techiman Road

Kumasi-Sunyani Road

He emphasized that financial provisions have already been made, and contractors under the Big Push initiative will be paid promptly to ensure swift and high-quality completion of these roads.

“If a contractor is not working, it won’t be because of delayed payment,” he stated. “Funding is available. And I encourage our traditional leaders to hold them accountable.”

Agriculture and Cashew Development

Recognizing Bono as Ghana’s cashew capital, President Mahama announced the establishment of a Cashew Development Board to regulate pricing, promote local processing, and support farmers. Additionally, a cashew processing factory will be constructed in the region to boost value addition and job creation.

“Cashew is not just a crop it’s a lifeline for thousands of families. We will give it the structure and investment it deserves.”

Education and Health Infrastructure

President Mahama pledged to revitalize the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and announced the establishment of a new medical school anchored on the now legally recognized Sunyani Teaching Hospital.

“We are investing in facilities to begin training doctors right here in Bono. This will serve Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and beyond.”

He also announced the resumption of all abandoned E-Block senior high schools, along with work on educational infrastructure at the Al-Farooq Islamic College of Education, ensuring inclusive access to Arabic and Islamic teacher training.

Market Redevelopment and Industrialization

Under the market enhancement strategy led by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, five modern markets will be constructed in Bono, including Sunyani.

These facilities will include clean water, sanitation, daycare centers, and digital infrastructure to support women traders.

He further outlined the rollout of a Regional Industrialization Program focusing on agro-processing and light manufacturing, as part of the government’s 24-Hour Economy Initiative.

Sports and Stadium Infrastructure

To promote sports development, Bono and the six newly created regions will each receive a fit-for-purpose stadium, bringing sports opportunities closer to the youth and communities.

Environmental Sustainability: Green Bono Agenda

Acknowledging the ecological challenges of the region, the President unveiled the Green Bono Agenda, aimed at reforestation, water protection, and climate-smart agriculture. This initiative will include tree-planting competitions among schools, with incentives to instill environmental stewardship in students.

“Every school child in Bono must plant and nurture a tree. This is our commitment to the future.”

President Mahama also highlighted the significant contributions of Bono natives serving in high national offices. He commended leaders such as:

Mr. Sammy Gyamfi – CEO, Ghana Gold Board

Mr. Williams Okofo-Dateh – CEO, Ghana Integrated Iron & Steel Development Corporation

Mr. Eric Adjei – CEO, National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Program

Madam Mavis Adjei-Kwaa – Executive Secretary, Ghana International Trade Commission

And several others making impactful contributions in infrastructure, energy, transport, and security.

“These sons and daughters of Bono reflect the great potential of our region and our nation,” he noted.

National Unity and Renewal

President Mahama concluded with a call for unity, collective action, and patriotism, emphasizing that the 2025 Budget sets the tone for macroeconomic recovery, job creation, and rural development.

“Let us rise above partisanship and division. Let us build a Ghana that works for all, not just a privileged few. This tour is more than a show of gratitude it is a reaffirmation of the covenant between us and a renewal of our shared resolve to reset Ghana.”

He ended his remarks with blessings for the Bono Region and the entire nation.
