Kintampo, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, pledging that the Bono East Region will receive its fair share of infrastructure under the government’s transformative Big Push Agenda.
Addressing traditional leaders, residents, and students at the College of Health in Kintampo during the launch of his three-region Thank You Tour, President Mahama emphasised the strategic importance of infrastructure to national development.
“Infrastructure is central to development and the Bono East region will not be left behind. Under the Big Push agenda, cabinet is finalizing approval for major infrastructural projects, many of which are earmarked for this region,” he declared to loud applause.
He underscored that roads are the top priority due to their poor state across the country, noting that improving them will enhance agriculture, trade, and access to essential services.
“I want to say that under the Big Push we are prioritizing roads because the state of our roads is in a very deplorable condition,” he noted.
According to the President, the Finance Ministry has earmarked nearly GHS 15 billion in the first year to upgrade road infrastructure nationwide.
“So for the first year, the Minister of Finance has provided almost 15 billion Cedis to be invested in improving our road network across the whole of the country. As I said, we are focusing particularly on roads that are critical for agriculture, trade and access to essential services,” he explained.
President Mahama listed several road projects targeted for the Bono East Region, a mention that drew enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.
“In the Bono East region, the roads that we are targeting include the Asueyi–Mesidan Road, the Ofuman–Wenchi Road, the Sunyani–Nkoranza Road, the Techiman–Wenchi Road, the Atebubu–Kajaji Road, and then also to complete the Kintampo–Tampoe Road, the Ejura–Atebubu Road, and the Busunya–Atebubu Road,” he stated.
He further hinted at additional projects under consideration to open up the region and improve connectivity for economic growth.
“There are other roads that we’ll also be working on that are not yet included on this list. These roads, once completed, will open up the region, improve market access for farmers, and reduce travel time and transport costs,” he added.
As part of a broader national infrastructure overhaul, the President also highlighted plans to construct outer ring roads in major urban centres.
“As stated in the NDC 2024 manifesto, we’re also committed to redesigning and constructing outer ring roads in major cities across the country,” he said.
These ring roads will help decongest city centres and improve traffic flow in cities including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Sunyani, and Techiman.
“The outer ring roads will target cities like Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Sunyani, and Techiman. For Techiman, which is a major transit point on the N10 highway, work has begun to open up the proposed 54-kilometer outer ring road. The Department of Urban Roads has initiated engineering surveys and design works to prepare the way for full construction to begin,” he explained.
President Mahama expressed confidence that the Techiman Ring Road will reduce congestion and improve road safety for both residents and travelers.
“This project will decongest the central business district of Techiman and enhance road safety for residents and travelers alike. The ring road would allow the big, heavily loaded trucks that are going to Burkina Faso and other northern destinations, instead of passing through the center of Techiman, they’ll use the outer ring road and continue on their journey,” he concluded.
President Mahama’s visit to Kintampo marks the beginning of a tour through the Bono East, Bono, and Ahafo regions to thank Ghanaians for their overwhelming support in the December 2024 elections.
On Friday, he will continue the tour with a visit to Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, and wrap up this leg with a durbar in Goaso, the capital of the Ahafo Region, on Saturday.
