The Tema West Municipal Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has distributed relief items to victims affected by the devastating floods that hit Tema Community 5, particularly the Church Village area, following heavy rains on June 9.
The relief exercise follows an earlier visit by the Tema West Municipal Director of NADMO, Mr. Kwaku Nana Tatantu, who toured the affected community to assess the extent of the damage, interact with victims, and assure them of the organisation’s commitment to supporting their recovery. During the visit, he explained that flooding in the area remains a recurring challenge due to Tema’s geographical location as a natural drainage basin for rainwater flowing from surrounding areas before it is discharged into the sea.
Presenting the relief items, Mr. Tatantu assured victims that NADMO would continue to monitor the situation and provide additional support where necessary. He noted that the items being distributed are intended as immediate assistance to help affected families cope with the aftermath of the disaster while longer-term interventions are considered.
The items distributed included sacks of rice, vegetable oil, mosquito nets, mosquito coils, mattresses, plastic buckets, sweaters, and other household essentials. More than 100 households benefited from the exercise.
Mr. Tatantu also encouraged residents who may be experiencing health complications following exposure to floodwaters to take advantage of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare initiative and seek immediate medical attention. He cautioned residents against entering floodwaters, noting that they may be contaminated and pose serious health risks.
Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude to NADMO for the timely intervention. One of the victims, Auntie Attaa, said she lost virtually all her belongings to the floods and was uncertain about where she and her family would sleep. She noted that the support received from NADMO would go a long way in helping them rebuild their lives.
