The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) spent a total of GHC13,079,669 on transformer replacements in the last quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.
This was disclosed by the General Manager for the region, Ing. Ankomah Emmanuel, during a meeting with a cross-section of media personnel at the ECG Nungua District Office on April 14, 2026.
Providing a breakdown of the expenditure, Ing. Ankomah said GHC9,379,765 was used to replace 32 transformers in the last quarter of 2025, while GHC3,699,903 was spent on replacing 22 transformers in the first quarter of 2026.
He explained that the replacements were necessitated by several factors, including vandalism, unauthorized interference, and accidental damage. According to him, acts of vandalism by individuals who tamper with or destroy transformers render them unusable and require costly replacements.
Ing. Ankomah also raised concern about illegal phase switching by some community members. “Some residents switch electrical phases on their own, which causes overload on other phases and can lead to transformers burning,” he said, describing the practice as unauthorized interference for which culprits can be prosecuted.
Additionally, he noted that road accidents involving vehicles crashing into ECG installations have caused extensive and often irreparable damage to transformers.
He therefore called on the public, community members, and local leaders to help safeguard ECG infrastructure to ensure a stable power supply. He also expressed appreciation to community leaders who promptly report outages, enabling the company to respond quickly to faults.
