TEMA, Ghana, 13 December: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has once again issued a strong warning against the ongoing demolition of homes, structures, and containers in Tema, calling for the exercise to be halted immediately.
According to Mr. Koomson, the demolitions are damaging the image of the government and could carry serious political consequences if they continue unchecked.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, December 6, Mr. Koomson cautioned that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) risks losing all its parliamentary seats in Tema in the 2028 general elections if the demolitions are not stopped.
He expressed grave concern over the actions of the Tema Development Corporation (TDC), questioning the motive behind the demolition exercise and urging anyone encouraging the corporation to pull down people’s properties to put an immediate stop to it.
“The way this demolition is being carried out is dangerous. If care is not taken, there could be a revolt, and it will go against the NDC. People do not vote for a government to make their lives miserable,” he warned.
Mr. Koomson stressed that continued destruction of livelihoods and properties would alienate residents and undermine public confidence in the government.
“By 2028, they will lose everything. The NDC will not have any footing in Tema if this continues. Whoever is behind the encouragement of these demolitions must stop it,” he added.
The GFL Secretary-General also called on the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to harmonise their processes for issuing building and structural permits.
He insisted that both institutions act on behalf of the government and must therefore present a coordinated and unified approach.
“TDC and TMA need to come together and agree on how they will handle the issuance of permits. They both represent the government, so there must be proper coordination,” he stressed.
Mr. Koomson further urged the authorities to shift their focus from demolishing properties to addressing more pressing challenges confronting residents in the municipality, such as unreliable water supply and malfunctioning traffic lights.
According to him, tackling these basic service delivery issues would better improve the lives of the people and restore public confidence in governance at the local level.
