Organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) have introduced a new “Swing Period” policy aimed at ensuring that songs released in December with strong public impact are not overlooked during the awards season.
The new policy is designed to give such late-year releases a fair opportunity to be considered in the following awards year, especially when they gain significant popularity shortly after their release.
According to the organisers, many songs released in December often struggle to gain proper recognition because the awards year may close before the songs have enough time to build momentum. The newly introduced policy is therefore expected to address this gap and provide a more balanced evaluation system.
The first songs to benefit from the Swing Period policy include Messiah by Sarkodie featuring Kweku Flick, as well as Excellent by Kojo Blak featuring Kelvyn Boy.
Both songs gained notable attention from fans and music lovers after their release, making them strong examples of why the policy was introduced.

Industry observers say the move could help create a more inclusive and fair awards process, ensuring that songs released towards the end of the year are not disadvantaged simply because of timing.
The introduction of the policy has already sparked conversations among musicians, fans, and industry stakeholders as preparations continue for the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
Organisers hope the awards will better reflect the true impact of songs within the Ghanaian music industry, regardless of when they are released during the year with this new development.
