Today, the management of Tema Development Corporation (TDC) launched a decisive operation aimed at recovering outstanding arrears owed by several state-owned companies. This bold move is intended to clear the mounting debts that have been significantly hindering TDC’s ability to operate efficiently and provide quality services.
Among the debtors, Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) stands out as the largest owing entity, with arrears tied to land lease agreements. Recognizing the urgent need to address these financial obligations, TDC’s management has intensified efforts to collect all outstanding payments without delay.
Speaking to the media during the launch of the arrears recovery campaign, TDC’s Managing Director, Mr. Courage Nunekpeku, issued a stern warning to all defaulters. “Whoever owes will pay, or they will face the consequences of having their properties locked up by the company,” he declared firmly. Mr. Nunekpeku emphasized that the recovery of billions of cedis in arrears is crucial to revitalizing TDC’s operations and sustaining its contribution to the region’s development.
The crackdown has already begun to produce results. Pioneer Kitchenware Ltd, another significant tenant, has been given a strict deadline of 72 hours to settle their debts. Additionally, several businesses operating within the TDC enclave were shut down today due to their failure to pay ground rent and other dues for over four years. This assertive action sends a clear message that TDC is serious about enforcing financial discipline and ensuring fairness among all tenants.
In a related initiative to improve the community environment, Mr. Nunekpeku, accompanied by officials from Tema Secondary School’s management, conducted an inspection tour around the school’s perimeter walls. They discovered unauthorized structures operating as pubs and drinking spots, which are detrimental to the students’ learning environment. These unapproved businesses are being targeted for immediate demolition to restore calm and order suitable for academic activities.
Mr. Nunekpeku issued a final warning to all would-be offenders: “After today, TDC will clamp down on any structure erected around the school walls without approval. No one will be allowed to disrupt the peace and learning atmosphere here, and nobody can stop us from enforcing this.
With this strong stance, TDC affirms its commitment to transparency, accountability, and fostering an environment conducive to both education and commercial enterprise, positioning the corporation for a more sustainable and efficient future.
