Tano South MP Criticizes Minority Over Chaos During SONA Debate, Calls for Constructive Dialogue in Parliament

Member of Parliament for Tano South Constituency, Hon. Charles Akwasi Asiedu, has addressed the recent chaos that erupted in Parliament during the debate on the State of the Nation Address (SONA).

In an interview with Citizen Kofi Owusu on Ahotor FM, Hon. Asiedu expressed his concerns about the conduct of the Minority, suggesting that their actions do not align with the nation’s development agenda. He alleged that the Minority seems more intent on obstructing government business rather than engaging constructively for the progress of Ghana.

According to Hon. Asiedu, the disorder during the session led to the suspension of government proceedings for 30 minutes. Even after the scheduled time had elapsed, the Minority continued to delay proceedings, keeping the Majority waiting in the chamber. He lamented that such actions are becoming a trend, recalling a previous incident where the Minority disrupted government business over a dispute concerning the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.

“In that instance, they stood up and declared that unless the Ablekuma North seat was officially declared in their favor, no government business would proceed. They even went as far as breaking into song, further disrupting proceedings,” Hon. Asiedu recounted.

He called for greater responsibility and cooperation among Members of Parliament, emphasizing the need to put Ghana’s interests first. “Parliament is not a battleground for partisan theatrics but a platform to deliberate on policies that can transform the lives of Ghanaians,” he concluded.

Hon. Asiedu urged all sides to focus on constructive dialogue and collaboration to ensure that critical government business is not stalled in the future.
