Tanko to hold crisis talks with Medeama players after shock defeat to Hohoe United

Head coach Ibrahim Tanko says he will hold talks with his players after Medeama Sporting Club suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat to league newcomers Hohoe United at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium.

The result extended Medeama’s poor run to five consecutive matches without a win in the Ghana Premier League, despite the Mauve and Yellow enjoying a numerical advantage for a large portion of the game.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, who endured a series of costly moments. Goalkeeper Felix Kyei missed from the penalty spot after striking the post, while an unfortunate own goal further compounded Medeama’s misery and handed the visitors a famous victory.

Despite the setback, Medeama remain top of the league table, holding a slender one-point lead after second-placed Bibiani Gold Stars were beaten by Young Apostles FC in the same round of fixtures.

Speaking after the game, Tanko admitted the team had endured an unusually difficult day but insisted such moments can happen in football.

“I have been in this game for a long time and days like this happen sometimes. It’s not normal that you miss a penalty, concede a goal and then score an own goal. In that situation it becomes very difficult to win,” he told the club’s media team.

The former Ghana international also revealed that he plans to hold discussions with his squad as they look to arrest the slump and refocus on the title race.

“We still have nine games to play. I think I have to meet with the players and then we will see the way forward,” he added.

Medeama will now be eager to quickly rediscover their form as the title race in the Ghana Premier League enters its decisive final stretch.
