A potential catastrophe was averted at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi on Friday morning, thanks to the timely intervention of the fire patrol team. A fire outbreak that gutted two shops in the early hours of the day was swiftly brought under control, preventing further destruction in the bustling commercial hub.
The incident, reported to have occurred around 5:00 a.m., left the two shops completely destroyed despite the best efforts of the firefighters. However, their proactiveness ensured that the flames did not spread to adjacent shops, averting what could have been a major disaster.
This marks the second fire incident at the redeveloped Kejetia Market since its inauguration. The first occurred in March 2023, wreaking havoc on over 30 shops and leaving traders counting significant losses.
Fortunately, Friday’s fire caused minimal disruption to business activities at the market. Traders and customers resumed operations shortly after the fire was extinguished, expressing relief that the damage was contained.
The latest incident has reignited conversations about the need for enhanced safety measures at the market to prevent future occurrences. Authorities are being urged to install advanced fire detection and suppression systems to safeguard the livelihoods of traders who depend on the market for their daily income.
