The leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has paid a high-level courtesy call on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, aimed at deepening strategic collaboration and securing stronger institutional support for the development of Ghana’s sports sector.
The delegation, led by SWAG President Kwabena Yeboah, marked the Association’s first official engagement with the Minister since his assumption of office.
Addressing the Minister, Mr Yeboah commended what he described as an inclusive and stakeholder-driven leadership approach.
“We have been extremely impressed with your relationship with sports journalists in this country. Even before your formal appointment, you visited our office — a gesture that was unprecedented and deeply appreciated,” he stated.
Mr Yeboah also lauded the Ministry’s support that enabled Ghana’s participation in the recent AIPS Congress in The Gambia, noting that the country’s presence generated positive visibility on continental and global platforms.
According to the veteran broadcaster, such international engagements reinforce the growing recognition of sports as a viable economic driver for Africa.
The SWAG President further expressed the Association’s support for the government’s sports fund policy, describing it as a potentially transformative initiative for sports development. He stressed the need for increased publicity, transparency, and stakeholder engagement to ensure the fund’s sustainability and impact, particularly at the grassroots level.
“Grassroots sports development remains critical to building a strong sporting future. The fund can play a pivotal role if it receives the necessary visibility and support,” he added.
In response, Minister Kofi Iddie Adams acknowledged SWAG’s influence within the sports ecosystem and underscored the importance of responsible and constructive sports journalism.
“Sports journalists are key partners in shaping the direction of the sector. Constructive criticism and professional reporting are essential for progress,” the Minister said.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with SWAG, including plans to jointly develop training modules to enhance the capacity and professionalism of sports journalists.
The Minister also echoed calls for broader publicity of the sports fund, emphasising its potential to attract investment, stimulate local talent development, and drive industry growth.
Other members of the SWAG delegation included Vice President Evelyn Nsiah Asare, General Secretary Charles Osei Asibey, Deputy General Secretary Kenneth Odeng Adade, Treasurer Owuraku Nsiah, and other key officials of the Association.
