Sudan Football Association Finalizes Contract Extension for Coach James Kwesi Appiah Until 2029

Sudan assistant coach Ignatius Osei-Fosu provided an update on the coaching staff’s contractual situation during his appearance on Pure FM stating that the technical team’s existing contract, under which they have been operating since James Kwesi Appiah’s appointment in September 2023, is scheduled to expire in September 2026.

This timeframe corresponds to the end of the initial three-year agreement signed when Appiah took over as head coach of the Sudan national team.

Osei-Fosu further revealed that the Sudan Football Association (SFA) had already taken proactive steps by presenting a new contract proposal to the entire technical bench, led by Appiah.

The proposed deal was designed to extend their tenure through 2029, offering long-term stability and explicitly covering the complete qualification campaign for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This forward-thinking offer from the SFA signaled strong confidence in the Ghanaian-led team’s direction and achievements to that point.

The background to this disclosure includes Appiah’s successful stewardship of the Falcons of Jediane, most notably guiding them to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a notable accomplishment that boosted morale and performance expectations.

Osei-Fosu’s comments on the radio highlighted the association’s eagerness to lock in continuity amid preparations for upcoming continental and international fixtures.

Subsequent developments clarified the final outcome: in early December 2025—specifically following negotiations concluded around late November or early December—the Sudan Football Association officially confirmed a three-year contract extension for Appiah and his staff, including Osei-Fosu.

This renewal, widely reported across Ghanaian and African sports media, secures their positions until 2028 rather than the initially proposed 2029. The extension was positioned as a direct reward for the team’s progress, particularly the AFCON qualification success and overall revitalization of the national side under Appiah’s leadership.

As of February 2026, with the current contract now running through 2028, the technical team enjoys extended security to focus on ongoing competitions future AFCON cycles. The shift from the original proposal’s 2029 end date to 2028 appears to reflect the finalized terms after discussions, ensuring stability without extending quite as far as initially floated.

This arrangement underscores the SFA’s commitment to a sustained project with the Ghanaian coaching contingent, amid Sudan’s efforts to rebuild and compete more effectively on the global stage.
