Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, recently held a productive meeting with the Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana to strengthen and build upon the bank’s successful headline sponsorship of the Black Star Marathon.
This major annual running event, which has quickly established itself as the country’s largest and most prominent marathon, drew an impressive 10,000 participants in its recent editions and serves as a powerful platform for promoting national unity, healthy living, and physical fitness across diverse communities.
Organized by the Black Star Marathon Foundation, the event—officially known as the Absa Black Star Marathon since Absa took on the headline sponsorship role starting in 2025—has earned strong high-level backing, including presidential endorsement that highlights its significance on both national and international stages.
The marathon attracts not only local runners but also a growing number of participants from around the world, turning it into a vibrant celebration that underscores the broader value of sports in enhancing community health, encouraging active lifestyles, and generating positive economic benefits through tourism, local business engagement, and increased visibility for Ghana.
During their discussion, the Minister and the Absa Bank leadership explored opportunities to deepen this collaboration beyond the flagship marathon itself.
A key focus was on extending support to grassroots-level sports programs and initiatives within schools, aiming to nurture young talent, instill values of discipline and teamwork from an early age, and make physical activity more accessible to children and youth across the country.
This aligns closely with Absa’s longstanding commitment to meaningful community investment in Ghana, where the bank has consistently channeled resources into areas such as education, entrepreneurship, and small business development to help drive long-term, inclusive, and sustainable progress for individuals and communities nationwide.
By expanding their joint efforts in these directions, both parties aim to create lasting impacts that ripple through society, fostering healthier generations and stronger foundations for sports-driven development in Ghana.
