The Chairman for Ghana Aids Commission, Dr Kyeremeh Otuahene has urged Ghanaians to stop the stigma against women living with HIV
According to him, about 350,000 known Ghanaians are infected with HIV, out of which 66% are women which shows women are the most infected
In an interview with Ahotor newsroom, he explained that, most of these women go through stigma and discrimination which affects them in their daily lives
“Sometimes children of such women are denied access to education and are refused certain privileges”.
Dr Otuahene explained that, such women go through a lot by suffering in the hands of people they within the community
He stated that it is against the laws of the country to discriminate against such people.
He urged such victims to boldly report to the Police or Commission for Human Rights Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for the law to take its course on such offenders
His comment came on Tuesday, March 8 when the whole world was celebrating International Women’s Day. A day to appreciate women for their achievements and contributions towards national development.
The theme for this year was ‘breaking the bias’.
“As we celebrate women all over the world and advocate against discrimination, there is the need to remember women who are stigmatized and discriminated because of their HIV status”
