Stop arresting people with mental illness- mental health workers fight the law

Ghana Psychological Association and some mental health workers are at war with the law for arresting and accusing persons who are mentally unstable.

 According to them, no human in his right senses will plan to kill him or herself, unless something is wrong, and therefore the criminalization of such people is unacceptable.

Data indicates that, a person within every second attempts suicide 40 seconds.

These suicide attempts has many contributing factors which could be hereditary, abuse of drugs and other social challenges.

In a statement by the Ghana Psychological Association, they called for a system that would ensure medicare for such people instead of imprisoning them.

 “They are like any other sick persons, so what they need is treatment not arrest, that’s why we are trained bring them to us not to the court in facing the law’’
