Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah, the Member of Parliament for the Ada Constituency, has urged Ghanaians to stop addressing her as the Deputy Minority Chief Whip.
She explained that with the recent declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) now holds the majority in Parliament, elevating her position to Deputy Majority Chief Whip.
Her statement follows a ruling by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin, on Thursday, October 17th.
The Speaker’s decision came after a petition from the NDC’s Minority side, which sought to clarify the status of four MPs who had taken actions that violated parliamentary rules.
The four MPs—Cynthia Mamle Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Peter Kwakye-Ackah (Amenfi Central), and Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena)—were ruled to have vacated their seats by filing to contest the upcoming December 2024 parliamentary election as either independent candidates or on the ticket of a different political party.
This move, according to Article 97 of the Constitution, automatically vacates their current seats in Parliament.
With these seats now vacant, the NDC holds 136 seats in Parliament, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has 135, shifting the balance of power in favor of the NDC.
Speaking in Kpone during John Mahama’s tour of the Greater Accra Region, Hon. Doyoe Ghansah expressed confidence in the NDC’s momentum, viewing the shift in parliamentary majority as a strong sign that the party is on track to win the 2024 general elections.
