STATEMENT BY HON. STEPHEN KOFI BAIDOO, 2024 NDC PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE FOR ASSIN SOUTH, ON RECRUITMENT TRAGEDY
I am writing today with a heavy heart, joining our nation in mourning the tragic and avoidable loss of young Ghanaian lives during the recent military recruitment exercise.
These young men and women were the picture of comradeship. They were full of hope, seeking only to serve their nation and secure a dignified future. For their lives to be cut short in this manner is a national tragedy and a profound personal loss for their families.
My Deepest Condolences
I extend my most profound sympathies to the families who are grieving this unimaginable loss. I stand with you, Ghana stands with you. To those who were injured, I pray for a swift and full recovery.
A Call for Urgent Reform
While we mourn, we must be resolute in our demand for change. The systems that led to this tragedy must be reformed. We cannot, as a nation, allow the hope of our youth to be turned into a hazard.
The new government, under the leadership of H.E. President Mahama, has a clear mandate to build a Ghana that works for everyone. This incident underscores the urgency of that mission.
I join the call for:
A Transparent Investigation: The families and the nation deserve to know what happened. I trust that the responsive NDC administration will ensure a swift and transparent review to provide answers and accountability.
Modernizing Recruitment: We must move quickly to make the recruitment process safer not just for the army but for all our security services. This will end the dangerous overcrowding that has marked these exercises and ensure the dignity and safety of applicants.
Standing with Our Community and Government
As a proud member a party which is focused on accountability and progress, I have full confidence that our government will address this challenge with the seriousness it deserves.
As a leader in my community, I stand ready to support all efforts to implement these necessary reforms. We owe it to the memories of the victims to build a safer, more efficient system that honors the ambitions of our youth.
May God grant strength to the bereaved families, and may the souls of our departed compatriots rest in peace.
SIGNED
Hon. Stephen Kofi Baidoo
