Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has been reportedly approached by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to serve on the yet formed Black Stars management committee ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.
The Executive Council of the GFA after an emergency meeting on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, took a decision to dissolve the management body of the team led by Ameenu Shardow after Ghana failed to qualify the African Cup of Nations in Morocco later this year. The Black Stars finished bottom in their group with only three points after six games without winning a single game behind Angola, Sudan and Niger.
The reports indicate the President of the GFA (Kurt Okraku) engaged Stephen Appiah during the 51st birthday celebrations of Dr Randy Abbey who has been tipped to chair the committee when formed.
The former Juventus attacking midfilder’s inclusion would mark his return to the committee after being listed as a member in 2022 prior to the last edition of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, though he did not attend any meetings. He however, expressed reservations about how past appointments and engagements were handled.
According to checks by AhotorSports, Appiah will be working alongside with the CEO of Ghana Premier League side Samartex, Richard Duah Nsenkyire and Samuel Aboabri, Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association.
The appointments to the committee could be finalised before the next round of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
