Stay Alive” Road Safety Campaign Launched to Tackle Road Accidents in Ghana

The Africa Road Urgent Campaign Ambassadors, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority and Ahotor FM, has launched a critical campaign to promote safe driving practices on Ghana’s roads. Dubbed “Stay Alive,” the initiative aims to create awareness among drivers, pedestrians, and citizens about the importance of road safety. This campaign comes at a crucial time, as road accidents continue to be a major concern in Ghana. According to the National Road Safety Authority, road accidents claim hundreds of lives and injure thousands more each year, resulting in significant economic and social costs to the country.

Ghana has struggled with a high rate of road accidents, with data from the National Road Safety Authority showing that in recent years, the country has recorded thousands of road crashes, resulting in hundreds of fatalities and injuries. These accidents are often caused by a combination of factors, including reckless driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate vehicle maintenance. The “Stay Alive” campaign seeks to address these issues by promoting safe driving practices and ensuring that all vehicles on Ghana’s roads are roadworthy.

Speaking to Ahotor FM, Mr. Kwaku Duffour, a member of the National Road Safety Authority, emphasized the need for fairness in enforcing road safety laws. He noted that while trotro and taxis are often checked, some private vehicles, including Land Cruisers, are sometimes left unchecked. Mr. Duffour stressed that everybody is subject to the law and that all drivers should be checked for compliance with road safety regulations, including having fire extinguishers, functional car lights, traffic indicators, and proper vehicle equipment. By ensuring that all vehicles are held to the same standards, the “Stay Alive” campaign aims to reduce the number of road accidents and promote road safety.

The “Stay Alive” campaign recognizes the importance of road safety awareness in preventing accidents and promoting safe driving practices. By educating drivers, pedestrians, and citizens about the risks associated with road accidents and the importance of road safety, the campaign aims to change behavior and promote a culture of safety on Ghana’s roads. This includes promoting safe driving practices, such as wearing seatbelts, avoiding speeding, and ensuring that vehicles are properly maintained. By working together, Ghanaians can reduce the number of road accidents and create a safer and more sustainable transportation system.
