Article 118 states: “Parliament shall have the power to make laws for the peace, order, and good government of Ghana.” The Supreme Court’s recent order to halt the Speaker’s determination constitutes a blatant overreach and undermines the principle of separation of powers, which is fundamental to our democracy. The NPP government has shown itself to be lawless, disregarding the clear mandates of our Constitution and eroding the very foundations of our democratic society.
The NDC Insight believes that the Constitution is akin to a Bible or Quran, a guiding document that all citizens must respect and follow. It is a covenant with the people, and the Supreme Court should know better than to engage in partisan biases. We urge the judiciary to refrain from overreach and allow the Speaker to fulfill his duties. Our system of governance is built on checks and balances, and it is crucial that each branch respects the others to ensure a thriving democracy.

Today, NDC Insight expresses a mixed feeling regarding the ruling by the Speaker of Parliament. While we are relieved that the Speaker did not mention adherence to the Supreme Court’s stay order, NDC Insight deeply disappointed by the decision to adjourn Parliament indefinitely. This move is a disservice to the people of Ghana, as every day that passes without the National Democratic Congress (NDC) fulfilling its duties is a lost opportunity for our future.
