SSNIT Hotels Sale: Officially inform us of the halt of the hotel sales, we can’t trust social media post – GFL

Abraham Koomson, the Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), clarified that Rock City Hotel withdrawing from the bid to buy 60% shares of four hotels owned by SSNIT does not change their plan to strike as they have not received official letter.

He explained this after Rock City decided not to pursue the purchase of La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Labadi Beach Hotel, Royal Ridge, and Elmina Beach Hotel.

Organised Labour had instructed members to stop working from July 15 to 17, 2024, and limit services to emergencies from July 18 to 21, 2024.

Mr. Koomson told Nana Dogbe on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu on July 13 that the strike is about SSNIT selling shares, not just Rock City.

He mentioned seeing social media posts that SSNIT stopped selling the hotels, but they haven’t received official word.

Mr. Koomson urged SSNIT and the government to officially notify labour about halting the sale.

He said a press conference from SSNIT would confirm it better than a social media post.

Besides GFL, other unions under the Organised Labour plan to strike if the government doesn’t cancel the SSNIT hotel sale and inform labour officially.

The unions announced the strike after meeting at the Hall of Trade Unions in Accra.

At a press conference, TUC Secretary-General Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah said they would strike until SSNIT stops selling shares in the hotels.

The statement was signed by Dr. Baah, Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo of the Forum of Public Sector Workers, and Kenneth Koomson of GFL.

Last Thursday, Employment and Labour Relations Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah told Parliament the NPRA approved SSNIT’s hotel sale.

Despite Rock City withdrawing, Abraham Koomson said Organised Labour’s target is SSNIT and not Rock City.

He said Ghanaians want SSNIT to stop selling the hotels to anyone not only Rock City.

Mr. Koomson demanded an official SSNIT statement or labour might involve the government, possibly seeking impeachment of the President and the SSNIT Board.
