SSNIT Boosts Pensions by 10%—CSPF Deems It Too Little Amid Economic Squeeze

The Concerned SSNIT Pensioners Forum (CSPF) has slammed the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) over its recently announced 10% monthly pension increase, calling it inadequate to tackle the tough economic conditions hitting retirees especially those on low incomes.

While appreciating SSNIT’s adjustment efforts, the Forum insists the hike fails to ease pensioner poverty or shield seniors from soaring living costs. In a statement to The Ghanaian Times, the retiree advocacy group dedicated to pension justice, equity, and dignified lives highlighted its November 19, 2025, petition to SSNIT. It demanded urgent reforms, including raising the minimum pension to a livable GH¢600.00 and annual increases of 15–20%.

“Our petition urged SSNIT to reverse the erosion of pension values from years of inflation-lagging hikes and below-national-minimum-wage adjustments,” the statement read. “We sought a GH¢600.00 minimum monthly pension and 15–20% average increases for 2026.”

CSPF emphasized that the current GH¢396.58 minimum for 2025 barely covers medication for many elderly pensioners, forcing reliance on family. The group also copied the petition to the Finance Minister, Employment and Labour Relations Minister, and National Pensions Authority CEO, urging their support. Without a guaranteed living minimum, they argued, percentage-based increases ring hollow.
