Sports Ministry Inaugurates Inter-Ministerial Technical Working Committee for Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Participation

Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Ministry have taken a decisive step toward leveraging the nation’s historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by inaugurating the Inter-Ministerial Technical Working Committee (IMTWC).

This high-level body, chaired by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, represents a coordinated national strategy to not only field a competitive Black Stars squad but also harness the tournament’s global spotlight for broader socio-economic gains.

The move underscores Ghana’s commitment to transforming its fifth World Cup appearance into a catalyst for growth in sports, business, tourism, and diplomacy.

Ghana’s Black Stars secured their berth in the expanded 48-team tournament earlier in 2025, marking their return to the Mundial after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.

The 2026 event, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, will feature an unprecedented 12 slots for African teams—nine direct qualifiers and three via intercontinental playoffs—reflecting the continent’s rising football prowess.

For Ghana, this qualification revives memories of their 2010 quarter-final heroics in South Africa, where Asamoah Gyan’s flair lit up the world stage.

However, preparation has been methodical. In March 2025, Minister Adams met with the Black Stars’ technical team, led by head coach Otto Addo, to emphasize unity and qualification as a national priority.

By September, the government mandated transparency in budgeting for qualifiers, with detailed breakdowns for away games against teams like Central African Republic and Comoros.

Most recently, on November 14, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced a GH¢150 million (approximately $13.7 million USD) allocation specifically for the Black Stars’ World Cup preparations, covering training camps, friendlies, and logistics.

This funding, combined with private sector involvement, signals a “no more business as usual” approach, as Adams has repeatedly stressed.

The IMTWC’s inauguration addresses the multifaceted demands of World Cup participation. According to its Terms of Reference, the committee’s primary goal is to “oversee the nation’s preparations to participate in the Mundial and leverage same for socio-cultural and economic dividends.”

This holistic scope ensures accountability, streamlined operations, and maximized impact, preventing the silos that have sometimes hampered past efforts.
