ACCRA – The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has officially clarified the travel arrangements for Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team following recent public comments by team members and a statement issued regarding the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.
In a statement dated April 5, 2026, the Ministry explained that arrival timelines and competition preparation protocols are set by the World Athletics Relays’ own guidelines, not by the Ministry.
According to the release signed by Bagbara Tanko, Head of PR & Communication, the Ministry’s role is limited to facilitating the procurement of travel arrangements based on recommendations from the National Sports Authority and the relevant federation. This is done strictly in line with approved schedules.
“With specific reference to the World Athletics Relays, the Ministry did not vary or alter the travel schedule as submitted by the Ghana Athletics Association,” the statement read.
The Ministry acknowledged the team’s public concerns but reaffirmed its commitment to following established procedures. It added that it will continue working with the National Sports Authority and various federations to strengthen coordination and ensure optimal preparation conditions for athletes.
Despite the controversy over travel logistics, the Ministry commended the team for their performance and their qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships.
“We wish them continued success,” the statement concluded.
The Ministry urged all correspondence on the matter to quote reference number and date as indicated in the official release.
