Sports Minister Pledges Gyandu Park as Next Major Rehabilitation Project After Essipong

Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, had revealed that Gyandu Park has caught his attention during his working tour of the region last week.

According to the Minister, while on a courtesy visit to the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, at the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), the two leaders discussed critical sports infrastructure challenges and development priorities in the region.

He stated that the Regional Minister had raised serious concerns about the deteriorating condition of Gyandu Park, describing it as an iconic venue in Ghana’s football history that had hosted numerous memorable Ghana Premier League matches.

The Regional Minister had also drawn attention to the poor state of the Youth Resource Centre in Axim, stressing that it required urgent intervention to realise its full potential.

Minister Kofi Adams told journalists that he had reassured his counterpart of the government’s firm commitment to completing the ongoing rehabilitation works at the Essipong Sports Stadium.

He further assured him that Gyandu Park would be the next major project in line for attention, explaining that its central location and immense historical significance made it a top priority in the ministry’s sports infrastructure revitalisation agenda.

The Sports Minister emphasised that the Western Region boasted a rich football heritage, pointing out that historic clubs such as Sekondi Eleven Wise and Sekondi Hasaacas had played pivotal roles in the development of Ghana’s league and football culture over the decades.

“As part of my (Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams) working tour in the Western Region, I paid a courtesy call on the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, at the WRCC to deliberate on critical sports infrastructure challenges and development priorities in the region.

The Minister raised pressing concerns about Gyandu Park, an iconic venue in Ghana’s football history that has hosted several memorable Premier League matches. He also called attention to the state of the Youth Resource Centre in Axim, which requires urgent attention to unlock its full potential.

In our discussion, I reiterated government’s commitment to completing the ongoing rehabilitation of Essipong Sports Stadium, and assured him that Gyandu Park will be the next major focus. Its central location and historical value make it a priority in our infrastructure revitalisation plans.

The Western Region has a proud football tradition. Clubs like Sekondi Eleven Wise and Sekondi Hasaacas have contributed significantly to the growth of Ghana’s league and football culture. We must collectively support their resurgence and restore the region’s sporting pride.”

He therefore called for collective efforts to support the resurgence of these clubs and to restore the region’s proud sporting legacy.
