Speeding Bus Slams Truck at Suhum Mankrong: 1 Killed, 37 Injured

SA tragic road accident on the Accra–Kumasi Highway at Suhum Mankrong has left one person dead and 37 others injured, raising fresh concerns about speeding and highway safety.

The crash occurred on Sunday, January 11, 2026, involving a 40-seater Zhong Tong passenger bus (registration number AS 7022-21) and a Man Diesel truck (GW 3969-U). Both vehicles were reportedly in motion at the time of the collision.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Suhum Municipal Fire Station received a distress call at 06:59 hours. A rescue team led by ADO II Bernard Boamah arrived at the scene eight minutes later, at 07:07 hours.

One person died on the spot, while 37 passengers—comprising 21 males and 16 females—sustained varying degrees of injury. The occupants of the truck escaped without harm. Several of the injured had already been transported to the Suhum Government Hospital before the arrival of the rescue team.

Firefighters worked swiftly to extricate the deceased from the mangled bus, provide emergency assistance to the injured, clear the wreckage, and restore traffic flow on the busy highway. The front portion of the bus was severely damaged, while the truck sustained only minor damage at the rear.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the bus was traveling at high speed before crashing into the truck, though investigations are expected to establish the exact cause of the accident.

The GNFS crew wrapped up operations at the scene at 08:57 hours and returned to base at 09:52 hours, once again demonstrating the Service’s prompt and professional emergency response in critical situations.
