Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament (MPs) allegedly involved in illegal mining, locally known as galamsey. In a passionate address on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, the Speaker called on lawmakers to lead by example and refrain from engaging in activities that undermine the nation’s development.
Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of integrity and accountability, reminding MPs of their role as leaders and representatives of the people. He cautioned that Parliament would not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any member found culpable in the fight against galamsey.
“If any of you are involved in galamsey, it’s time to advise yourselves. As a House, we must be prepared to bite the bullet and confront this menace head-on. We cannot compromise on the principles of leadership and service to our constituents,” he declared.
Bagbin further urged MPs to expose their colleagues who might be complicit in illegal mining activities, stating, “If I receive credible information that any of you is involved in galamsey, the repercussions will start right here in this chamber. If you know those engaging in it, submit their names to me.”
The Speaker also took the opportunity to reflect on the heavy responsibility MPs bear in driving national development. He encouraged lawmakers to make meaningful contributions during their tenure, highlighting the significant turnover in the House during the last election cycle.
“With 114 new members in this Parliament, we’ve seen a high attrition rate. This should serve as a reminder that your time here is limited. Use it wisely to leave a lasting impact. For many, these four years might be their last opportunity to serve in this capacity,” Bagbin advised.
The Speaker’s remarks come at a time when illegal mining continues to ravage Ghana’s environment, depleting water bodies and agricultural lands. His call serves as a stark reminder of the collective responsibility of Parliament in tackling the nation’s most pressing challenges and safeguarding its future.
