Solomon Owusu: I Will Never Support Rigged Elections; NPP Should Face Kpandai Rerun

The Director of Communications for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has stressed that the credibility of Ghana’s democracy depends on the conduct of free and fair elections, insisting he would never support electoral rigging or fraud under any circumstances.

According to him, it was precisely this commitment to electoral integrity that led him and others to part ways with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which he said had lost its appeal due to practices that undermine democratic principles.

Mr Owusu made the remarks while speaking on issues surrounding the impending parliamentary rerun in the Kpandai Constituency. The matter is currently before the Supreme Court, with a final verdict expected on January 28, 2026.

He argued that it is unacceptable for citizens to wake up as early as 3:00 a.m., queue patiently to vote, only for the outcome of such an election to be compromised. He questioned the logic of relying on the Supreme Court to confer parliamentary legitimacy when the electoral process itself is in dispute.

Mr Owusu maintained that if the NPP candidate genuinely believes he won the election, he should have no hesitation in contesting the rerun. He emphasized that elections are governed strictly by law, noting that the Tamale High Court ordered the rerun because electoral procedures were not properly followed.

He accused the NPP of avoiding the rerun out of fear and attempting to secure victory through legal technicalities at the Supreme Court rather than submitting to the will of the electorate through a transparent and lawful electoral process.
