A disturbing trend has emerged in Ghana’s Police Service, with disciplinary convictions plummeting from 17% in 2020 to a mere 7% in both 2021 and 2022, under the administration of former Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
This alarming drop has raised concerns among experts, with criminologist Professor Justice Tankebe, of the University of Cambridge, calling for further scrutiny into the reasons behind this decline.
Professor Tankebe emphasized the need to examine police professionalism, highlighting the importance of analyzing complaints against police officers and the proportion of those complaints that are upheld.
He noted that the data reveals a significant decrease in convictions, sparking an essential discussion about the underlying causes of this sharp drop.
The appointment of COP Yohuno is expected to usher in a new era for the Ghana Police Service, with reforms anticipated in disciplinary procedures, police professionalism, and public trust in law enforcement. As the police service navigates this transition, it is crucial to address the concerns surrounding the decline in disciplinary convictions and work towards restoring public trust.
