Serie A Postpones Easter Monday Matches After Pope Francis’ Death

The Italian football world stood still as Serie A announced the postponement of all four matches scheduled for Easter Monday, following the sudden death of Pope Francis.

The Vatican confirmed early Monday morning that the 88-year-old pontiff had passed away peacefully in his sleep, sending shockwaves through Italy and the global Catholic community.

In a mark of respect, Serie A, in consultation with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), decided to reschedule the fixtures, honoring the profound impact of the Pope’s passing on the nation.

A league statement read: “Following the passing of His Holiness, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A can confirm that today’s league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed. The date of the rearranged fixtures will be announced in due course.”

The Pope’s death was announced by the Carmalengo. Cardinal Farrell said in a statement:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

“At 7:35 this morning (local time), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

The matches affected include a highly anticipated clash between Cagliari and Fiorentina at the Unipol Domus, where Cagliari hoped to capitalize on their home advantage against a resurgent Fiorentina side. Lazio were set to face Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico, with both teams vying for crucial points in their respective campaigns.

The day’s marquee fixture was Juventus’ trip to Parma, where the Old Lady aimed to continue their push for the Scudetto against a gritty Parma outfit.

The fourth match, Atalanta versus Bologna, was also postponed, as the league sought to unify its response to the national mourning period.
