Sefwi Wiawso MP Reassures Cocoa Farmers Amid Producer Price Reduction

The Member of Parliament for the Kofi Benteh Afful, has assured cocoa farmers that government interventions are underway to support them despite the reduction in the cocoa producer price for the 2025/2026 cocoa season.

According to the MP, the announcement of the new producer price has caused significant concern and frustration among farmers, with many expressing dissatisfaction and describing the price as too low considering the rising cost of production.

Speaking in an interview with the media at Sefwi Asawinso in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal of the Western North Region, Mr. Afful acknowledged the challenges facing cocoa farmers but emphasized that the government is actively implementing reforms aimed at reviving and stabilizing the cocoa sector.

He disclosed that a new bill involving the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is currently being prepared for presentation before the Parliament of Ghana. The proposed legislation seeks to guarantee that cocoa farmers receive at least 70 percent of the Gross Free On Board (FOB) price of cocoa.

According to the MP, the bill will also introduce a mechanism that allows for automatic adjustment of the producer price in response to changes in the global cocoa market, ensuring that farmers benefit whenever international prices increase.

Mr. Afful noted that the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of cocoa farmers and sustaining the country’s cocoa industry, particularly during this challenging period.
