The President of the Private Security Guard Association of Ghana, Mr. Roland Obibah Mensah, has strongly condemned the recent shooting incident at Dome Kwabenya, describing the actions of the security personnel involved as unprofessional and unacceptable. He expressed concern that the incident has cast a negative image on the private security industry.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Obibah Mensah emphasized that private security companies in Ghana are not legally authorized to arm guards with firearms for routine security operations. He explained that the industry operates under strict regulations that govern the handling and use of weapons.
According to him, private security personnel are mainly engaged in bodyguard services, escort duties, and institutional security assignments. While some specialized assignments may require trained personnel, he stressed that security companies cannot issue firearms to guards for personal protection while on duty.
Mr. Obibah Mensah further explained that individuals may legally acquire licensed firearms for personal use through the appropriate legal procedures, but this does not extend to private security firms. He noted that Legislative Instrument 1571 clearly prohibits private security guards from carrying firearms and remains in force despite calls for its review.
The Association President expressed disappointment that the Dome Kwabenya incident involved personnel linked to the private security sector. He cautioned against the careless display or use of firearms in public, warning that such actions could endanger lives and undermine public confidence in security services.
Mr. Obibah Mensah also highlighted the growing security concerns in the country but maintained that rising crime rates should not be used as justification for the reckless use of weapons. He therefore urged private security guards across Ghana to remain vigilant, exercise professionalism, and use sound judgment at all times, adding that they have the right to refuse unlawful or inappropriate instructions from employers or clients.
