Scrapping BECE: I Disagree With The Proposal – Educationist
David Akpaloo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Monarch Education Hub, has voiced concerns over the proposed elimination of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Ghana.
He believes that such a move could negatively impact the nation’s education system.
Mr. Akpaloo emphasized the importance of careful decision-making in education during his appearance on Ahotor FM‘s morning show ‘Adekyee Mu Nsem,’ hosted by Nana Dogbe.
He expressed his worry about the government’s proposal to scrap the BECE, which is currently a basic requirement for admission to senior high schools.
“I completely disagree with the proposal,” Mr. Akpaloo stated. He fears that removing the BECE without a solid alternative could destabilize the educational framework.
The Ministry of Education is drafting a bill to provide legal backing for free and compulsory education at the senior high school (SHS) level.
Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum announced that the bill also includes plans to integrate junior high school (JHS) into secondary school, creating a six-year secondary education system.
Additionally, the bill proposes to cancel the BECE as a requirement for entering secondary school. Instead, the examination would be used solely for school selection purposes.
Under the new system, the certification for completing SHS would become the first formal educational certificate students receive, replacing the BECE.
Responding to these changes, Mr. Akpaloo warned that such decisions could eventually lead to the collapse of Ghana’s entire education system.
He urged policymakers to be mindful of the long-term implications of their education decisions.
