Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has criticized the Ministry of Sanitation, describing it as unnecessary and ineffective in achieving its mandate.
She questioned the efficacy of existing sanitation laws, pointing out that despite numerous regulations from past to present, sanitation issues persist.
Speaking to the media, Justice Akuffo argued that sanitation is the responsibility of local governments, not the ministry.
She asserted that the Ministry of Sanitation has failed to make any significant impact, citing Accra’s increasing filth as evidence.
She questioned the ministry’s activities, noting the lack of visible clean-up efforts, which are often carried out by local communities rather than the ministry itself.
Justice Akuffo highlighted that market women often have to wait for government-provided equipment to conduct clean-up exercises.
She urged the government to consider scrapping the Ministry of Sanitation, deeming it useless for the country.
