Samuel Eto’o Re-Elected FECAFOOT President with Overwhelming 85–2 Mandate for Second Term

In a landslide affirmation of his leadership, football icon Samuel Eto’o has secured a second four-year term as President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT).

The election, held today, November 29, 2025, at the CAF Centre of Excellence in Mbankomo, saw Eto’o—running unopposed—capture an overwhelming 85 out of 87 valid votes, with just two ballots spoiled.

This near-unanimous support from the federation’s delegates underscores a strong internal consensus, granting the 43-year-old legend another mandate until 2029 to steer Cameroonian football toward renewal.

Eto’o’s path to re-election was cleared well in advance, as potential challengers failed to meet FECAFOOT’s eligibility criteria, leaving him as the sole candidate.

The process unfolded smoothly under the watchful eyes of representatives from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), who attended to ensure compliance with international governance standards.

This setup, announced just days ago on November 18, helped diffuse pre-election tensions, including disputes with the Cameroonian Ministry of Sports over federation autonomy.

This victory builds on Eto’o’s initial election in December 2021, where he promised a radical overhaul of a federation long plagued by corruption and stagnation.

His first term saw tangible steps forward, including efforts to professionalize local leagues and restore Cameroon’s standing in international competitions—efforts that his supporters credit for the delegates’ resounding endorsement.

Eto’o’s re-election arrives against a backdrop of sharp criticisms that have shadowed his tenure. Detractors, including a coalition led by international lawyer Emmanuel Nsahlai and former FECAFOOT Vice President Henry Njalla Quan Jr., have leveled serious allegations: match-fixing in lower divisions, conflicts of interest tied to his ambassadorship with betting firm 1xBet, and the alleged misappropriation of funds from international friendlies. Lingering questions also surround his 2021 election—accused of manipulation—and a suspended tax-fraud conviction from his playing days in Spain.

With this fresh mandate, the pressure is on Eto’o to deliver. Supporters envision a transformed landscape: enhanced youth development pipelines, transparent financial management, and a revitalized Indomitable Lions squad poised for success in upcoming AFCON qualifiers and World Cup cycles.

Key priorities include mending ties with government bodies, accelerating infrastructure projects like stadium upgrades, and fostering inclusivity for women’s and grassroots football—areas where his first term showed promise but fell short amid the turbulence.
